For Beginners Who Would Love to Own a Pet!
As a matter of fact, having a pet at home is a huge responsibility it’s just like having a baby, so it is very necessary to be prepared before you own one.
Selection of a suitable companion
Finding a suitable pet for your home is very necessary. For example, if you have a very small premise at home. Even if you want to cannot keep a large breed dog, i.e. Rottweiler, Saint Bernard, etc.
Or if you have any asthma patients at home it is not advisable to have dogs as pet in general, they can easily opt for an aquarium instead. Therefore, first step is to recognize the want and type of pet you would like to own.
Younger the better
Make sure you buy your pet at young state. This makes it easy for your pet as well as you to adapt. Other point to be noted is that animal should be weaned at appropriate age, weaning age matters. For example if it is a pup, should be weaned from dam only after 30 days, these 30 days pup should be with the dam and should be properly fed with dam’s milk. If not it can affect the immunity of the pup.
Environment
Should understand the fact that they are small and they just got separated from their mother. It is our duty to make them comfortable as possible. Show them around, let them get used to the surroundings. If you have some other pets show them too, they all should get along finally. It is always recommended to keep the pets inside the home or with you for the initial few days this will make it easy for them to adapt.
Feeding
Pets which are newly introduced may not have a good appetite and this is something common. This is mainly due to the stress they undergo due to the new surroundings and new people. Gradually most of the animals recover from that. It is very important to give them the appropriate type and quantity of feed at the right time. Feed them what they eat if they were in their natural habitat. Do not give them everything that we eat daily. At young age feed them with small quantities at frequent intervals which will help in good digestion. Reduce the intervals and increase the quantity of the feed as they grow up. Nowadays it is reported that pets are more prone to kidney and liver diseases due to their feeding habit. So it would be wise enough to avoid too much of packet feeds like pedigree, drools etc.
At young age they can be given growth tonics, vitamins and mineral supplements. Give ample amount of water and exercise too. Remember always a healthy animal will have a longer life.
Vaccination and Medication
Again it depends on the type of pets you have. But in general it is necessary to vaccinate animals because there are many zoonotic infections that are life threatening. Maintaining a vaccination and medication record will help you to keep track of everything.
Never give unnecessary medication, only give according to their needs. A common practice observed is that even if the pup does not have any ectoparasites like fleas, lice, ticks owners use medicated shampoos thinking it would prevent. But the truth is, it has harmful effects on your pet’s skin so use only when it is necessary otherwise use only a normal pet shampoo. Use only pet products for pets, because it is designed and formulated for them whereas human products will be harmful to their skin causing rashes and alopecia.
Training
We all want our pets to behave properly. Listening to our commands being obedient, all these are best interests. Simple training is not that difficult task. I personally recommend motivational training which includes
- Identify your pet’s favourite feed / toy /anything which she or he continuously use this will be the reward
- Demonstrate the command you want them to do
- Make them do it frequently
- Reward and appreciate them (appreciation flatters not only humans)
- Express that you are extremely happy to have them (it makes a lot of difference)
- When he/she becomes naughty it’s necessary to punish them too. Show them what they did which didn’t please you and punish them
Grooming
As I referred earlier they are just like babies. They should be groomed periodically. Give them good bath. Giving bath again depends upon the type of pet you have if it is dog give him/her bath every 15 days. Do not give them bath every now and then, as they lose essential oils of their skin which will make the skin dry and prone to dandruff. So take advice from the veterinarian about the grooming schedule.
Love and Affection
It is the key component which bridges the gap between you and your pet. Animals have special ability to sense the emotions inside you never underestimate them thinking they will not understand what we say. They sense our feelings it is we who do not understand their feelings.
So love your pet unconditionally they are worth it.!
